    Background & context

In the Middle Ages livestock was no mere extra but the wealth of a farm: milk, wool, draught power and meat on four legs. That is exactly why raids went for the herd first and not the barn: whoever drove off the animals took away a village's basis for the coming year. The breeds were smaller and hardier than today's high-yield animals. Jacob sheep barely reached a man's knee, and pigs were still very close to the wild boar.

    On the tabletop

With 104 animals you can fill the yards and pastures of an early or high medieval village: 16 sheep, 8 goats, 8 cows, 4 horses, 4 donkeys, pigs with piglets, 20 chickens and 24 geese. In Pillage scenarios the livestock is the loot the raider wants to drive off and the defender wants to keep. The animals follow the breeds of the period and therefore look different from modern ones.
