    Background & context

    In the early Middle Ages Ireland knew no central power, only dozens of small túatha quarrelling over cattle, pasture and prestige. The cattle raid counted as an accepted form of warfare, and the same warrior bands also rowed across to Britain, where Dál Riata established itself in Scotland. From the 9th century the Northmen joined in, founded Dublin and Limerick and became now enemies, now allies in the next quarrel between neighbours. Wolfhounds remained the property of the upper class and turn up again and again in the saga texts.

    On the tabletop

    Your Irish war band consists of 28 lightly equipped warriors led by four armoured nobles and chieftains. On the table it relies on swift raids, ambushes and skirmishing, yet it can close up into a shield wall when needed. Two handlers with eight wolfhounds run down fleeing enemies and drag riders from their horses. Opponents range from Late Romans, Picts, Welsh and Romano-Britons to Saxons and Vikings, depending on the century you play.
