    Background & context

For centuries the pit house was the all-purpose building of villages across northern and western Europe. A shallow pit was dug, a rafter roof set over it and thatched with reed or straw that reached almost to the ground. These buildings served as weaving huts, workshops and stores, some as dwellings too. Archaeologists know them from Anglo-Saxon settlements such as West Stow as well as from the trading town of Hedeby. Anyone raiding a village came upon these low roofs first, at the edge of the farmsteads.

    On the tabletop

These three pit houses form the heart of an early medieval village in northern or western Europe. For each hut you choose gable walls of wattle and daub, planks or logs, fit one of the four doors and add a thatched lean-to if you like. That way no two huts look alike. On the table they serve as a home, workshop or storehouse to fight over in a Pillage scenario.
