    Background & context

    Between the 4th century and the High Middle Ages, missile combat was never the main thing in the North, but time and again it was decisive. Bow and sling were part of the equipment of poorer warriors who could not afford mail shirt and sword, and yet the outcome of many a battle hung on them, Hastings in 1066 being the best-known example. Saxons, Vikings, Normans, Bretons and Franks sent such troops out in front of the line and pulled them back behind the shield wall as soon as it came to hand-to-hand fighting.

    On the tabletop

    With 24 archers and 12 slingers you give an army between the 4th century and the medieval period its missile troops. They suit Saxons, Normans, Vikings, Bretons and Franks, and with heads from the Germanic Warriors set also Germanic tribes. In front of the shield wall they shoot at the advancing enemy and fall back once the melee begins. Daggers and axes turn some figures into light infantry, and the slingers can also be built as archers.
