Background & context

On 14 May 1940 the Secretary of State for War, Anthony Eden, called on the radio for volunteers to join the Local Defence Volunteers. Within a few weeks well over a million men came forward who were too old or too young for regular service, or could not be spared. There were hardly any weapons: shotguns, pikes and obsolete rifles from American deliveries. Only gradually did this turn into a reasonably equipped home defence force, which was stood down again in 1944. The BBC series that began in 1968 turned this piece of everyday wartime life into a staple of British television.

On the tabletop

Walmington-on-Sea against the threatened invasion of 1940: the 18 metal figures depict the Home Guard from the TV series Dad's Army. Captain Mainwaring, Sergeant Wilson, Lance-Corporal Jones, Privates Pike, Walker, Frazer and Godfrey, plus Warden Hodges, the Verger and Reverend Farthing appear in uniform or civilian clothes. A leaflet explains how to field the platoon in Bolt Action. Armed with old and improvised weapons, it belongs in scenarios defending the British coast.
