    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    After the retreat from Dunkirk, Britain was threatened with a German invasion in the summer of 1940 - a real danger that the British government responded to by setting up a volunteer militia. Men who were not serving on the regular front due to age or health formed this home defence using improvised means and outdated equipment. The television series Dad's Army took up this historical material and made the garrison of the fictional coastal town of Walmington-on-Sea world famous. For decades, the series has been part of Britain's cultural memory and has had a lasting impact on the perception of the Home Guard.
