    Hintergrund & Einordnung

    The French armed forces played a prominent role in the mid-19th century Crimean War as part of the alliance against Russia. Their commanding officers enjoyed a comparatively good reputation among contemporaries and in later historiography, both strategically and in terms of troop command. The commanders presented here are among the most famous figures of the French expeditionary corps and represent the military leadership style of the Second Empire army. The conflict on the Crimean Peninsula between 1853 and 1856 was one of the first modern wars in which new weapon technology, supply logistics, and troop discipline were closely intertwined.
