Product details

Background & context

The Chasseurs d'Afrique were among the most experienced cavalry units in the French army of the 19th century. Originally formed for service in North Africa, they brought years of combat experience from the Algerian campaign to the Crimean Peninsula. Given the logistical difficulties of transporting horses and equipment over long distances, the cavalry forces of both allies in the Crimean War were numerically limited. Nevertheless, the Chasseurs d'Afrique played an active role in the cavalry operations of this conflict and were regarded as a reliable and mobile fighting force.

On the tabletop

These three mounted command figures form the head of a regiment of Chasseurs d'Afrique for your French Crimean army in Black Powder. This command group turns a line of riders into a led unit that you can spot at once in the fighting. Historically the Chasseurs d'Afrique charged the Russian batteries on the Fedyukhin Heights at Balaklava on 25 October 1854, taking pressure off the Light Brigade. For a game based on that battle they are the right light cavalry.
