Background & context

The Chasseurs d'Afrique were light cavalry units of the French Army, originally raised for service in North Africa. Their experience in agile, open-country warfare made them a valuable asset on the battlefield, even if the cavalry of both great powers in Crimea was only present in limited strength - transport logistics and horse availability posed significant obstacles. The units operated in multiple squadron echelons and were designed for rapid flanking movements and support attacks.

On the tabletop

Three mounted Chasseurs d'Afrique in metal bring French light cavalry to your Crimean War table. The corps had been raised in Algeria in 1831, rode small horses and travelled with little baggage. Because horses were hard to ship to the Crimea, allied cavalry remained scarce there. In Black Powder you use the unit with care: for scouting, against open flanks and for pursuit. The Chasseurs d'Afrique took part in the Battle of Balaclava.
