Product details

Background & context

After the Napoleonic Wars, France comprehensively restructured its artillery: calibers were standardized, and units were clearly divided into field and siege formations. The 12-pounder field gun became the standard equipment for mobile artillery, proving its reliability and tactical versatility. In the Crimean War, the French army deployed this weapon across various battle terrains to effectively support its infantry. During this period, French artillery was considered one of the most powerful in Europe and significantly shaped the course of combat on the Crimean Peninsula.

On the tabletop

The 12-pounder was the most common French field gun of the Crimean War, and this set provides exactly that piece with its metal crew. In Black Powder you place it behind your infantry to bombard Russian positions before your own columns advance. At the Alma the French artillery covered the advance in just this way, and before Sevastopol it spent months in siege batteries. Combined with British troops it forms an allied army.
