A badly damaged French townhouse in 3 mm MDF with an archway through the ground floor. Half-collapsed storeys and sloping floors show a street after shelling, matching the rowhouses of the same range.

Background & context

Saint-Lô was an important road junction in western Normandy and was therefore bombed as early as 6 June 1944. By the time American troops took the town in mid-July, most of its houses had been destroyed. Afterwards it became known as the capital of ruins. Multi-storey houses with an archway leading to back yards and workshops were typical of French towns.

On the tabletop

Set the destroyed house in the middle of a row of intact rowhouses and the street looks as if it has just been hit by artillery. Through the archway you move infantry into the back yard without stepping onto the open street. The sagging floors and broken walls give cover on several levels. Several destroyed houses side by side make a ruined street for urban fighting in 1944.
