Product details

Background & context

In many small French towns a fountain stood in the middle of the market square, often in front of the church or town hall. For a long time residents fetched their water there, and later the square remained a meeting place on market days and holidays. In the street fighting of 1944 such open spaces were dangerous, as riflemen could watch them from the windows all around. Anyone taking a town usually had to clear the houses around the square first.

On the tabletop

Put the fountain in the middle of a square where several streets meet. For troops crossing the square, the stone rim is often the only protection, and anyone pinned there sits in the field of fire of the surrounding houses. A squad can dig in behind the basin and hold the square. Together with the town hall, café and rowhouses of the same range you build a town centre for games on the Western Front.
