Hintergrund & Einordnung

The Chindits emerged in response to British defeats against Japan in Southeast Asia and embodied a completely new concept of warfare behind enemy lines. Under Brigadier Orde Wingate, regular soldiers from Britain, India, and Burma were retrained as long-range penetration groups, intended to operate deep within enemy-controlled jungle. Aerial supply and carrying all necessary equipment on their backs or on mules characterized their daily lives. These fighters challenged the supposed invincibility of the Japanese adversary in the jungle and acted as pioneers of a new form of irregular warfare in Burma.
