Product details

Background & context

In the flat Normandy countryside, church towers were often the only high points for miles around. Both sides used them as artillery observation posts, which is why many towers were deliberately shelled in the summer of 1944. In Sainte-Mère-Église an American paratrooper was left hanging from the church tower in the night before 6 June. Small chapels along farm tracks also served troops as shelter or aid stations.

On the tabletop

Place the chapel on the edge of a village or at a crossroads between fields. The tower dominates everything nearby and blocks long lines of sight, so attacks often bunch up around it. With the pews in the nave you can represent an aid station or a command post. The chapel works as a mission objective in a Normandy village.
