    Kastilien war im 11. Jahrhundert eines von mehreren christlichen Königreichen im Norden Spaniens, und die Grenze zu den muslimischen Taifas verschob sich fast jedes Jahrzehnt. Gekämpft wurde ebenso oft gegen Nachbarn wie León, Aragón oder Navarra. Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar, den beide Seiten El Cid nannten, diente in dieser Gemengelage mal dem eigenen König, mal dem Emir von Saragossa. Gepanzerte Speerträger bildeten den festen Kern, um den herum die Reiterei arbeiten konnte.

    On the tabletop

    Heavy armour, spear and shield make these eight metal Castilian foot soldiers a unit that can absorb cavalry charges as long as other troops protect their flanks. In Hail Caesar or SAGA you therefore place them in the line as a solid block around which your cavalry attacks. They belong to 11th-century Spain, when Castile fought the taifas and its Christian neighbours and El Cid served now the king, now the emir of Zaragoza.
