Background & context

Armand Jean du Plessis wurde 1624 Erster Minister Ludwigs XIII. und machte Frankreich zu einem zentral gelenkten Staat. Im Dreißigjährigen Krieg tat er, was man von einem Kardinal nicht erwartete: Er zahlte den protestantischen Schweden Subsidien und trat 1635 selbst gegen die katholischen Habsburger in den Krieg ein. Für ihn ging Staatsräson vor Konfession - eine Rechnung, die für Frankreich am Ende aufging.

On the tabletop

Cardinal Richelieu comes with two figures and stands in the command post of your French army in Pike & Shotte, as commander-in-chief or as a scenario figure. As first minister to Louis XIII he steered France and sent others into the field. In the Thirty Years War he paid subsidies to the Protestant Swedes and in 1635 entered the war against the Catholic Habsburgs, a setting for games in the later years of the war. Both figures are metal.
