    Product details

    Background & context

The Skoutatoi were the backbone of the thematic armies: heavily armoured spearmen who formed a wall from their large shields. Their job was not the breakthrough but to be the secure anchor point, and the cavalry rallied behind their ranks to attack again. Between the 9th and 11th centuries their equipment changed visibly, the shape of the shield above all. That is exactly the span this kit covers.

    On the tabletop

The 25 heavily armoured skoutatoi form the shield wall of a Byzantine army in 28 mm scale with their large shields. They hold the centre as a secure anchor, behind which your cavalry rallies for its next charge. Up to ten men can carry a sword instead of a spear. The two shield styles decide whether the unit belongs to an early or a later Byzantine army.
