    Product details

    Background & context

On the eastern frontiers of the empire, matters were seldom decided in great battles. Instead, detachments of light cavalry shadowed raiding parties for days, cut off their way home and struck only once their plunder had slowed them down, a way of making war that Byzantine manuals describe as an art in its own right. The frontier soldiers of this zone, the Akritai, were even celebrated for it in heroic songs.

    On the tabletop

As light horsemen of the Byzantine borderlands, the twelve koursores ride ahead of your army, watch the enemy and pursue beaten units. In smaller border actions you set them on the trail of raiding parties, block their way home and strike when the enemy, laden with plunder, can only move slowly. In open battle they support cataphracts and infantry, and the scale is 28 mm.
