    Product details

    Background & context

Byzantium took over mounted archery from the very opponents it needed it against: Huns, Avars, Pechenegs and later Seljuks. The Strategikon of Maurice describes training and equipment down to the last detail, including the requirement to be able to handle the bow even at full gallop. Feigned flights and wearing the enemy down from a distance were thus part of the standard repertoire and did not count as a last resort.

    On the tabletop

Twelve horse archers give your Byzantine army a mobile missile force in 28 mm scale. Shooting from the saddle, staying constantly on the move and avoiding close combat is how they fight. With a feigned flight you draw the enemy out of his position and wear him down from a distance. They work best on the wings and against slow foot troops that cannot follow them.
