    Product details

    Background & context

In the 10th century Byzantium drew up its cataphracts in a blunt wedge: rider and horse in lamellar and scale armour from head to hoof, with the mace-bearers at the front. Nikephoros Phokas and John Tzimiskes used this formation not to work round enemy lines but simply to push straight through them. The effort involved was enormous; such units remained expensive and rare and were committed with corresponding care.

    On the tabletop

As the heavily armoured cavalry of the 10th-century Byzantine army, the twelve cataphracts attack the enemy line head-on and break through it rather than going round. Rider and horse are fully armoured. Form them into a solid wedge and commit them at the decisive point, because such a unit was costly and rare. Light horse and foot troops guard their flanks for you while they do so. The scale is 28 mm.
