    Background & context

Byzantium seldom held its borders with brute mass, but with depth. In front of the heavy line stood the psiloi, archers, slingers and javelinmen who wore the enemy down, secured the flanks and carried out the ambush in mountain passes. The military manuals of the empire, from the Strategikon to the Taktika of Leo VI, devote chapters of their own to these light-armed troops. Anyone who wanted to hold out against Arabs, Bulgars and Normans could not do without them.

    On the tabletop

The 30 figures give you the light troops of a Byzantine army in 28 mm scale. Twelve of them become armoured archers, and the rest can be built as slingers, light archers or javelinmen as you choose. Place these lightly armed psiloi in front of the spearmen so they can shoot at the enemy and wear him down during his approach. They also guard the flanks and fight in passes and rough ground where the heavy line cannot go.
