Background & context

After Dunkirk, Churchill wanted troops who would carry the war back to the occupied coast. From the summer of 1940 the Commandos were formed, volunteers put through brutal training in the Scottish Highlands, who attacked Vaagso in 1941 and the dry dock at St. Nazaire in 1942. In the desert David Stirling went a step further: his Special Air Service drove through the Sahara with the Long Range Desert Group and blew up Italian and German aircraft on their forward airfields. The SBS, for its part, used folding canoes to carry explosive charges to the hulls of ships in occupied harbours.

On the tabletop

The 30 figures build SAS, SBS or Royal Marine Commandos of the Second World War. Their job lies behind enemy lines: small groups with Sten, Thompson and Bren raid airfields, coastal batteries or depots, one man with a demolition charge blows the target and the radio operator keeps contact. The sniper rifle covers the withdrawal. For scenarios such as the raid on Vaagso in 1941 or St Nazaire in 1942 you field several teams.
