    Background & context

    Am 14. Mai 1940 rief Kriegsminister Anthony Eden alle Männer zwischen 17 und 65 auf, sich für die Heimatverteidigung zu melden. Gerechnet hatte die Regierung mit 150.000 Freiwilligen, bis Juli trugen sich fast 1,5 Millionen ein. Uniformen und moderne Waffen gab es anfangs nicht - eine Armbinde mit drei Buchstaben musste reichen, dazu Schrotflinten, Brecheisen und Golfschläger. Aus dem Haufen wurde später die weit besser ausgerüstete Home Guard.

    On the tabletop

    When Anthony Eden called for home defence volunteers on 14 May 1940, nearly 1.5 million men had enrolled by July instead of the expected 150,000. These ten figures show a section of the Local Defence Volunteers with improvised weapons, plus extra firearms and Molotov cocktails. In Bolt Action you use them to hold buildings and objectives in scenarios against a German landing. Their strength lies in holding ground, not in attacking.
