Hintergrund & Einordnung

British infantry squads in World War II were tactically built around the light Bren machine gun, which served as a reliable fire support base in combat. For operations in cold climates, British soldiers resorted to heavy wool greatcoats, sleeveless leather jerkins, and camouflaged groundsheets as improvised capes. This equipment was characteristic of campaigns in the Apennines, as well as in Northwest Europe and Germany during the latter years of the war. Woolen caps, scarves, and gloves supplemented the equipment, enabling soldiers to remain combat-ready even in harsh winter conditions.
