Background & context

British formations used machine guns and mortars on every front and in every season, in attack as in defence. When the fighting shifted to north-west Europe in the last winter of the war, the crews were issued heavy coats and leather jerkins against cold and wet. The combination of a flat-firing machine gun and a steeply falling mortar bomb covered both kinds of fire that a rifle platoon could not deliver by itself.

On the tabletop

In Bolt Action, heavy weapons platoons provide the support weapons, here for British and Canadian troops in winter, wearing thick greatcoats and leather jerkins. Two medium machine guns with three crew each fire directly and pin down enemy infantry, while the medium mortar with its three crew drops rounds from above onto targets behind cover. A platoon commander leads the teams. This backs up your rifle platoons with firepower, in attack as well as in defence.
