    Background & context

    When the British Army returned to Europe by way of Sicily in 1943, it brought with it formations that had been learning since 1940, in North Africa and the Far East, how modern war works. In terms of organisation that meant every company carried its own support weapons instead of waiting on battalion level. The forward observer was the real innovation here, because he could call by radio for fire that he did not fire himself. Taken together this produced a firepower that in 1940 had still been reserved for an entire battalion.

    On the tabletop

    After years in North Africa and the Far East, the British Army returned to Europe through Sicily and Italy, followed in 1944 by Normandy and the push into Germany. This metal group gives your British Bolt Action platoon its support: two officers to give orders, a medic for the wounded and a forward observer who calls in fire by radio. The water-cooled Vickers covers open ground with sustained fire, and the 3-inch mortar fires in an arc over cover.
