Product details

Background & context

The 17-pounder was developed as an answer to the ever more heavily armoured German tanks that the British met in North Africa. From 1942 it was in action in Africa and later all over Europe, with Canadian and other Commonwealth formations as well. At short range it penetrated over 200 mm of armour. The price for that was its bulk: without a tractor the crew could barely move the gun from the spot.

On the tabletop

Canadian and other Commonwealth units used the 17 pounder just like the British Army, so it belongs in either force. Its strength is penetration: at short range it can deal with even the most heavily armoured German tanks. The price is weight and bulk, and without a tractor it hardly leaves its deployment position. The gun and five crew figures fit together on the oval MDF base.
