    Product details

    Background & context

The Welbike was developed by the British Special Operations Executive, whose workshop in Welwyn produced a whole range of equipment with Wel names. The brief was a motorcycle that fits into a parachute container. The result was a single-cylinder machine with folding handlebars, a retractable saddle and wheels the size of a child's bicycle. The Welbike was fine on roads but of little use in the soft ground at Arnhem - it made the jump all the same.

    On the tabletop

The Welbike was a folding miniature motorcycle from Welwyn that dropped with the paratroopers in a supply container and was ready to ride within seconds. About 4,000 were built; they were underpowered and slow, but a great help to a tired paratrooper with a long way to go. The two riders on their Welbikes belong in your British or Polish airborne force in Bolt Action. Use them as messengers or scouts, and get two men to a distant objective faster than on foot.
