    Background & context

    British parachute and airlanding battalions could take only what fitted into gliders and drop containers. That ruled out tanks and field artillery, so all their firepower lay with their own machine gun and mortar teams. At Arnhem in 1944 it became clear what that meant: the 1st Airborne Division held out for days against armoured formations because observers, mortars and machine guns in the row of houses worked closely together. All the while the medics were working with almost no resupply.

    On the tabletop

    Gliders and supply containers left no room for tanks or field artillery, so the firepower of British airborne battalions lay with their own machine gun and mortar teams. This metal group gives you a Bolt Action heavy weapons platoon for that: two officers, a medic, a forward observer for artillery or air support, a Vickers team for sustained fire at long range and a 3-inch mortar for indirect fire. At Arnhem in 1944 such teams held out for days against armoured units.
