The Red Devils went into battle without tanks, so everything heavy had to jump with them. This box provides 36 plastic paratroopers along with four metal teams plus a 6-pounder anti-tank gun: firepower you can lug along.

Background & context

British airborne troops arrived behind enemy lines by parachute or glider and afterwards had only what had landed with them. That is why every mortar and machine gun team counted for so much: it stood in for the artillery that could not come along. At Pegasus Bridge the sums worked out, and at Arnhem the battalions held on days longer than anyone had expected. They were given the nickname Red Devils as early as 1943 in North Africa, and by the enemy at that.

On the tabletop

No vehicles are included; all the punch is in figures and teams. You build the 36 paratroopers into sections with the Bren as light machine gun and the Sten for close range, and from the figures with PIAT and scoped rifle you can split off an anti-tank team and a sniper team as needed. Five supports come in metal: light and medium mortar, flamethrower, medium machine gun and the 6-pounder anti-tank gun with crew as the heaviest weapon against tanks. That puts a pure infantry platoon on the table, one that spreads its firepower across many small teams and gets by without transports.
