Background & context

North Africa was a war of distances. Between Egypt and Libya front lines shifted by hundreds of kilometres within weeks, because it was not firepower that decided matters but fuel, water and spare parts. Whoever pushed too far forward lost his supply line and then came under pressure himself. Only when the 8th Army stood at El Alamein in autumn 1942, on a narrow front that could not be outflanked, did the pendulum swing for good. After that it was one continuous push to Tunisia and on to Italy.

On the tabletop

Two guns give this desert platoon its weight: the 6-pounder anti-tank gun waits dug in for enemy tanks, while the 25-pounder fires on positions and infantry as light artillery. In front of them stand the 36 infantry of the 8th Army as a platoon HQ and three sections, painted as British, Australians, New Zealanders or Indians. The Vickers MMG and 3-inch mortar operate as weapons teams behind the line. With the two Bren Carriers and their passengers you move small sections quickly across open desert terrain. The box has no tank; the carriers are your only vehicles.
