Background & context

Die BL 5.5 inch entstand aus der Erkenntnis, dass die britische Mittelartillerie nach 1918 schlicht nichts Brauchbares mehr besaß. Ab 1942 stand das Geschütz in Nordafrika, wo es mit rund fünfzehn Kilometern Reichweite deutsche und italienische Batterien erreichte, ohne selbst erreichbar zu sein. Die 8th Army setzte es bei El Alamein massiert im Gegenbatteriefeuer ein. Nach dem Krieg blieb der Typ jahrzehntelang im Dienst, von Korea bis ins südliche Afrika.

On the tabletop

For a British Eighth Army force in the Western Desert, this metal gun provides the medium artillery. The 5.5 inch howitzer was mainly used against enemy batteries and delivers indirect fire on targets at long range. Its place is behind your line, firing over the heads of your own infantry. The crew wear desert dress, and the oval MDF base holds gun and crew together.
