Hintergrund & Einordnung

Die britische 8th Army entstand 1941 in Nordafrika und vereinte Briten, Australier, Neuseeländer, Inder und weitere Verbände des Commonwealth unter einem Kommando. Ihre bekannteste Formation, die 7th Armoured Division, führte eine Wüstenspringmaus im Divisionszeichen und wurde danach schlicht Desert Rats genannt. Der Spitzname überdauerte Nordafrika und begleitete die Division bis nach Nordwesteuropa.
