    Product details

    Background & context

The rulers of the Maghreb kept guard units that stood outside tribal ties and so were bound to the sultan alone. Recruited south of the Sahara, these troops served the Almoravids and Almohads as a reliable core and at the same time as a counterweight to the fickle Berber contingents. In the field they stood in a dense formation of spear and shield, behind which the light cavalry launched its attacks.

    On the tabletop

The Black Guard is the bodyguard of the rulers of the Maghreb and the solid core of the battle line in your Moorish army. The 30 figures with spear and shield stand in close order in the centre and give the light cavalry a secure base from which to launch its attacks. You build standard bearers and musicians from the included parts to lead the unit. In 28 mm scale the guard suits armies of the Almoravids and Almohads.
