Background & context

The British Expeditionary Force moved out to France in the autumn of 1939 and dug in along the Belgian border. When the German thrust broke through the Ardennes in May 1940, the front behind it was cut off. What followed was a fighting retreat all the way to the Channel, covered by exactly such support teams: mortars firing from gardens and ditches, machine guns at the canal bridges. Over 300,000 men got out at Dunkirk, and their heavy equipment stayed behind on the beach.

On the tabletop

France, 1940: the British Expeditionary Force dug in along the Belgian border and, after the German attack, fell back all the way to Dunkirk. For a Bolt Action force of this period the set provides two officers, a medic and a forward observer. A Vickers machine gun team keeps bridges and roads under sustained fire, while the 3-inch mortar engages enemies behind cover with fire in an arc. Alongside your BEF rifle sections, the group provides leadership and fire support.
