Background & context

Die British Expeditionary Force rückte im Herbst 1939 nach Frankreich aus und traf im Mai 1940 auf einen Gegner, der schneller war als jeder Plan. Ihr Ordnance ML 3-inch Mortar stammte noch aus den Zwanzigern und kam mit knapp 1.500 Metern Reichweite kaum an die deutschen Werfer heran. Erst stärkere Munition und ein verstärktes Rohr schoben die Reichweite über 2.500 Meter. In den Rückzugsgefechten bis Dünkirchen deckten die Werferteams Straßensperren und Brücken, während sich der Rest absetzte.

On the tabletop

In 1940 British BEF battalions carried little heavier than the 3-inch mortar, and in your early Bolt Action list it is the medium mortar team. From a covered position it fires in an arc at German squads behind hedges and walls. In scenarios about the retreat to Dunkirk it covers roadblocks and bridges while the rest of your force pulls back. Three metal BEF figures crew it.
