Background & context

In mid-December 1944 the Ardennes sector was regarded as a quiet corner where worn-out and newly arrived US divisions were supposed to catch their breath. That is exactly where the German attack broke, in frost and in a fog that pinned the Allied air forces to the ground. Anyone sitting in Bastogne at Christmas fought on surrounded. On the table that means white ground, short lines of sight, every farmstead an objective, and troops who look as muffled up as they did back then.

On the tabletop

For your first evening in the Ardennes you open the booklet, which contains scenarios and the assembly plans for the box. The 24 US infantry in winter kit defend the ruined farmhouse, while the 18 Fallschirmjäger advance from the other side. You can build the M8 Greyhound as an M20 instead, and on the US side it patrols the flank. The 8 Order Dice decide who acts next, and pin markers and vehicle damage markers show what a unit has already taken. You look things up in the German rulebook; a gaming mat is not included, and a white cloth is enough for the snow.
