Description

22 wooden barrels in three sizes, cast in plastic so that quay, cellar vault and inn yard do not stay empty. Stacked they become a barricade, singly a loot marker, and because barrels looked the same in every century, they fit in anywhere.

Background & context

For over a thousand years the barrel was Europe's standard container. Celts and Romans already knew it, and in the Middle Ages beer, wine, salt meat, herring, pitch and gunpowder travelled in it along every road and across every quay. A cooper made it from bent oak staves with hoops of willow or iron, and because it rolled, one man alone could move a barrel that he could never have carried. For the gaming table that means: wherever people traded, stored goods or drank, barrels stood around, and that is exactly where they belong on your table too.

On the tabletop

Place these 22 barrels in three sizes in taverns, castle storerooms and harbours. Stacked up, the four large and eight medium barrels form a barricade, while the ten small ones can be scattered as loot or objectives. In Pillage scenarios they are goods to be plundered or defended. Since barrels looked much the same for centuries, they fit anything from the early Middle Ages to later periods.
