Heraldic shields for the knights of the English Barons' War of 1215 to 1217 in 28 mm scale. The pre-cut waterslide transfers show the arms of well-known lords of the period and fit the Wargames Atlantic plastic shields.

Background & context

After King John repudiated Magna Carta, many English barons rose against him from 1215 and invited the French prince Louis into the country. On both sides, nobles bearing their own arms led their retinues, among them William Longespée, a half-brother of the king, and the mercenary captain Faulkes de Breauté. In May 1217 Thomas of Perche was killed in the streets of Lincoln, and in August Hubert de Burgh won a sea battle off Sandwich. The Treaty of Lambeth ended the war the same year.

On the tabletop

These arms give your mounted knights and their retinues a clear allegiance, so everyone at the table can see which unit follows which leader. Use the damaged versions on seasoned fighters or in the rear ranks. As the transfers are already cut out, you only dip them briefly in water after priming and gloss varnishing and slide them onto the shield. In The Barons' War this lets you set loyalist and rebel factions against each other.
