Product details

Background & context

The Normandy hinterland was shaped by the bocage, small fields enclosed by high earth banks with dense hedges. Every farm with house, barn and stable became a small strongpoint for the German defenders. In June and July 1944 American and British infantry had to take it field by field and farm by farm. Losses were heavy, and the advance often gained only a few hundred metres a day.

On the tabletop

Set the barn next to a farmhouse and surround the yard with hedges, and you have a piece of bocage on the table. Behind the wide double doors you gather troops who wait out of sight for their turn. From the platform with its ladder a scout watches the ground beyond the hedges. The farm makes a good target for an attack in July 1944.
