    Background & context

    In early 1943 the Australian Army reorganised its militia formations and the Australian Imperial Force into lighter jungle divisions. In the process the number of submachine guns rose from 400 to 981 per division, since in the jungle density of fire over a few metres counted for more than range. Because roads and open ground were lacking, the personnel of surplus transport and anti-aircraft units moved into the rifle platoons. The number of field engineers was doubled, because thousands of watercourses and Japanese booby traps lay in the way.

    On the tabletop

    In early 1943 Australia reorganised its divisions into lighter jungle divisions, raising the number of submachine guns per division from 400 to 981. This ten-figure metal section shows exactly that: an NCO and three soldiers with SMGs, a Bren team and four riflemen. In dense jungle you fight with it at close range in Bolt Action, where weight of fire counts for more than reach. The Bren also gives the section firepower at longer range.
