Background & context

Australian snipers were often given hardly any special equipment, sometimes not even a telescopic sight. Even so, the infantry companies held a striking number of good shots, many of them professional hunters in civilian life. The 2-inch mortars brought back from the desert, by contrast, were a disappointment in the jungle: the dense canopy frequently made the bombs burst while still in the air. From 1944 the reorganised jungle divisions received limited numbers of American backpack flamethrowers, which cleared Japanese bunkers reliably.

On the tabletop

Australian snipers received little special equipment, sometimes not even a scope, but many of them had been professional hunters in civilian life. These three two-man teams round out an Australian force in the Pacific: a sniper for aimed shots at range, a light mortar for fire in an arc and a flamethrower against Japanese bunkers, as issued to the jungle divisions from 1944. Under the dense canopy, however, mortar rounds often burst in the air.
