Product details

Background & context

Until well into the 20th century, European villages were built tightly around church, street and well, and almost every plot had its fenced garden. Villages often stood at crossroads and river crossings, so many battles turned on them, from Aspern and Essling in 1809 to the villages of Normandy in 1944. Between the houses, fences, hedges and walls slowed every attack and split it into small groups.

On the tabletop

Run the fences between the buildings so the main street is not the only open route. Enemy infantry clearing the village house by house then has to climb garden fences and spends longer in the open. Leave deliberate gaps to steer movement where you want it. The set works for World War II fights over built-up areas just as well as for villages of the gunpowder era that are fought over.
