    Zwischen 400 und 600 n. Chr. setzten sich germanische Gruppen im Osten und Süden Britanniens fest, teils als angeworbene Söldner, teils als Siedler, die einfach blieben. Ihre Aufgebote bestanden zum größten Teil aus Ceorls, freien Bauern, die mit Speer, Schild und wenig mehr ausrückten. Rüstung besaß nur, wer sie sich leisten konnte oder vom Herrn gestellt bekam, und das waren wenige. Gegner waren romano-britische Fürsten ebenso wie rivalisierende sächsische Anführer.

    On the tabletop

    Without armour, these eight metal Saxon warriors are more agile than their armoured comrades and hard to pin down. In Hail Caesar or SAGA you send them across rough ground to take an objective or threaten a flank. This is what most of an early levy looked like: free farmers with spear and shield who fought in the east and south of Britain between AD 400 and 600. Alongside armoured warriors they round out your force.
