The Romano-British of the 5th and 6th centuries were the successors of the Roman provincial population of Britannia who, after the withdrawal of the legions, defended the island against invading Saxons, Picts, and Scots.

    Background & context

    In the 5th century a mail shirt was a fortune: hundreds of hours of work, wire for thousands of rings, and nobody left who produced such things in series as in Roman times. Whoever wore one belonged to a lord's retinue and fought as a profession. Such men stood in the front rank, covered themselves with large shields and stabbed over the rim of the shield. They were few, but they decided whether a British line held or broke.

    On the tabletop

    In mail, with spear and shield, these eight metal Romano-Britons belong in the front rank. Variant A forms the main unit of your Romano-British army in Hail Caesar or SAGA, the one that decides whether the line holds. In the 5th century such fighters were part of a lord's retinue and made war their profession. Lighter troops on the flanks protect them while they take the first clash with the Saxon line.
