    Background & context

    Around 410 Rome withdrew its last field troops from Britain and the province was left to itself. What order remained was carried on by local rulers, with warriors still equipped in the Late Roman manner: oval shields, mail for the wealthy, horsemen as a strike force. Against Saxons, Picts and Irish these small kingdoms held out through the fifth and sixth centuries. The tales of Arthur are rooted in this period, whether as a war leader or as a later legend.

    On the tabletop

    The box holds the same force as the Late Roman Warband; the transfer sheet turns it into Romano-Britons. In SAGA the 4 heavy cavalry ride as the mounted retinue of your warlord, the armoured infantry and the command group form the core of the shield wall, the unarmoured warriors from the 3 sprues fill the ranks, and archers and slingers skirmish in front. In Hail Caesar and Pillage that gives you foot, skirmishers and a small cavalry unit. The shields take their designs from the LBMS sheet in the box.
