Background & context

On the western frontier of the colonies, settlers built simple timber houses, often with clapboard walls, a pitched roof and a brick or stone chimney. A handful of such houses along a road made up a small village that served as market, meeting place and stopover. During the war of 1775-1783 armies passed through these places again and again, billeting troops or fighting in the streets. The first shots at Lexington in April 1775 were fired in the middle of a village.

On the tabletop

Four houses let you lay out a settlement along a road or around a crossroads. Leave enough space between the buildings for your units to pass through, and use the houses as cover on the advance. Whoever controls the settlement also controls the roads running through it. The two small houses work on their own as lonely homesteads at the edge of a wood.
