Background & context

Most colonists made their living from farming, and a typical farm consisted of a house, a barn and several timber outbuildings. Many battles of the War of Independence were fought across the fields, pastures and orchards of such farms, Freeman's Farm near Saratoga in September 1777 being a well-known example. Farms also supplied armies with grain, livestock and fodder, which often made them a target for foraging parties.

On the tabletop

Spread the four buildings loosely around a yard and you get a farmstead that covers far more ground than a single house. The long workshop works well as a barrier on a flank, while the small shack fills gaps between fields and fences. You can also set the buildings apart to represent several scattered farms. A contested farm gives any scenario in open country a clear focus.
