    Product details

    Background & context

The Almogàvers came from the border mountains of Aragón and Catalonia, where raiding across the frontier was part of everyday life. Without heavy armour but with javelin and short blade, they made a name for themselves as mercenaries of the Crown of Aragón. In 1303 the Catalan Company under Roger de Flor marched as far as Anatolia and there defeated the Turks for Byzantium. Their battle cry Desperta ferro echoes through literature to this day.

    On the tabletop

The Almogàvers are light foot soldiers from the mountains of Aragon and Catalonia, used in 28 mm scale as mobile javelinmen. Without heavy armour they move quickly, hold woods, slopes and broken ground, and throw their javelins at an approaching enemy. Cleavers, swords or spears arm them for the close fighting that follows, and shields and a banner are included. They suit armies of the Crown of Aragon up to the time of the Catalan Company around 1303.
