Background & context

In February 1941 the first German units landed in Tripoli to prop up the battered Italians. Under Erwin Rommel this relief corps became the formation that swung back and forth between Egypt and Tunisia for two years. The men wore khaki tropical uniforms, and in the heat the heavy steel helmet often gave way to the pith helmet or the field cap. After El Alamein in the autumn of 1942 the initiative was lost, and in May 1943 the remnants surrendered in Tunisia.

On the tabletop

The 38 figures are enough for a German infantry platoon in North Africa between 1941 and 1943, and the included sheet shows how it was organised. Kar 98, MP 40 and MG 34 arm the sections, while the anti-tank rifle gives one soldier a weapon against light vehicles. Mortar and MG crews go on the square 40 mm bases as separate weapons teams. You choose steel helmet, pith helmet or field cap for each figure, and the force fights anywhere from Tobruk to Tunisia.
