Product details

Background & context

In February 1941 the first German formations landed at Tripoli to prop up the battered Italians. What began as a holding mission became, under Erwin Rommel, a two-year war of movement across Libya and Egypt: Tobruk, Gazala, El Alamein. The desert forced solutions of its own, from tropical uniform and sand filters to the constant worry about water. And it turned an anti-aircraft gun into the best anti-tank weapon of the campaign. In May 1943 the chapter ended in Tunisia.

On the tabletop

With this army the deployment revolves around the 8.8 cm Flak 37: you place the big gun with its seven-man crew on a long line of sight from which it brings enemy tanks under fire early. The 36 Afrika Korps infantry form the HQ and the squads, with the MMG team and the 81mm mortar firing from behind them. The Panzer III is the only vehicle and takes on all the mobile tasks, because once set up the Flak stays where it is. The result is a desert platoon that would rather let the enemy come than attack itself.
