    Hintergrund & Einordnung

The German Africa Corps was sent to North Africa in February 1941 to support the Italian armed forces. Under the command of Erwin Rommel ("the Desert Fox"), it participated in numerous battles in Libya, Egypt, and finally Tunisia, significantly shaping mobile desert warfare. Key battles such as Tobruk, Gazala, and El Alamein went down in military history. The units of the Africa Corps had to operate under extreme climatic conditions and adapted equipment and tactics to the special requirements of desert warfare - characteristic features included light tropical uniforms, tropical helmets/field caps, and sand protection for weapons and vehicles. The 8.8 cm Flak 37, originally designed as an anti-aircraft gun, was repurposed as a deadly anti-tank weapon in North Africa - Allied tank commanders came to know the "88" with fear and respect. After the defeat in Tunisia in May 1943, the chapter of the Africa Corps ended; many veterans later continued fighting in Italy.
